How every list on this site is researched, ranked, sourced, and kept current.

A top-10 list is only as good as the numbers behind it and how honestly they're presented. Every list on AllTheTopTen.com follows the same process so you can trust what you're reading — and check it yourself.

1. Choosing a ranking metric

Each list is built around a single, clearly stated metric — height in meters, box-office gross in US dollars, top speed in km/h, GDP in current US dollars, and so on. We name the metric up front so "top 10" always means something specific and comparable, not a matter of opinion.

2. Sourcing the data

We draw numbers from authoritative public sources: official statistics agencies, primary record keepers, peer-reviewed data, and recognized reference datasets. Every list shows the sources it was built from. Where sources disagree, we prefer the most authoritative and most recent, and we note the basis we used.

3. Ranking & presentation

Entries are ranked strictly by the stated metric. Each gets a short, factual blurb and the key figures, plus a simple to-scale visual so you can see how big the gaps really are — because the difference between #1 and #10 is often the most interesting part of the story.

4. Human review

Lists are drafted by a custom content pipeline and then reviewed by a person before publishing. The automation keeps the format consistent and fast; the human review checks the figures against the sources, catches anything that looks off, and applies judgment the pipeline can't. Nothing goes live purely on autopilot.

5. Keeping lists current

Many rankings change over time — records fall, revenues grow, data gets revised. Each list carries an "updated" date so you know how fresh it is, and topics that move are revisited and re-dated rather than left to go stale.

6. Independence

Rankings are determined by data, never by advertising or affiliate relationships. Ads and any affiliate links are kept separate from the editorial ranking and never change an entry's position.

Corrections

We get things wrong sometimes, and we'd rather fix them than defend them. If you spot an error or know of a better source, tell us on the contact page — corrections that include a source are handled fastest, and we re-date the list when we make a substantive change.
