How we ranked this
Ranked by senior men's international caps ('A' internationals) recognized by FIFA, as compiled in Wikipedia's list of men's footballers with 100 or more international caps (table current through 18 August 2026). Men's game only — women's internationals are tracked separately. Where FIFA later revised a total, the revised figure is used (Al-Mutawa: 202). Tied players are ordered as in the source table. Totals for the active Europeans were re-verified against September 2026 reporting: Ronaldo (233) and Modrić (202) had played no internationals since the World Cup, with their next fixtures falling after this page's update date.
FAQ
Who has the most international caps in men's football?
Cristiano Ronaldo, with 233 caps for Portugal — the first man to reach 200. Lionel Messi (207, now retired from internationals) and Luka Modrić (202) complete the top three.
What counts as a cap in this ranking?
Only senior 'A' internationals recognized by FIFA: qualifiers, tournament matches and friendlies between senior national teams. Matches FIFA doesn't recognize — Olympic games, for example — are excluded, which is why Soh Chin Ann is listed at 195 rather than his 219 all-games total.
Does this list include women's international football?
No. This ranking covers the senior men's game only; women's internationals are tracked on separate record lists.
Is Cristiano Ronaldo still playing for Portugal?
As of September 2026, yes — he remains available for selection at 41. Reports in July 2026 suggested a farewell appearance against Wales in the Nations League on 24 September 2026, which he has not confirmed.
The ten nations that have scored the most goals in FIFA World Cup history, from Brazil's record 237 goals to Hungary's 87, ranked by total goals scored across all tournaments through 2022.
