Quick answer: 1. Steven Spielberg, 2. James Cameron, 3. Christopher Nolan, 4. Anthony & Joe Russo, 5. Peter Jackson, 6. Michael Bay, 7. David Yates, 8. Ridley Scott, 9. Tim Burton, 10. Andrew Stanton.

Two men sit far out in front of every other director in cinema history: Steven Spielberg, whose career total is built from roughly 35 features across five decades, and James Cameron, who has reached nearly the same number with about a third as many films. Between them they have directed the highest-grossing film of all time and several of the most successful franchises ever made. This list ranks directors by the combined worldwide theatrical gross of every film they have directed, in nominal dollars. Christopher Nolan's 2026 jump to third — powered by The Odyssey's $1.68 billion — is the biggest change to the leaderboard in years.

The ranking

1

Steven Spielberg

How we ranked this

Items are ranked by a single metric: lifetime worldwide theatrical box office gross, in US dollars, for every feature a person is credited with directing, descending. Figures are nominal — not adjusted for inflation — and include re-release grosses, which is why older titles such as Jurassic Park and Titanic carry totals above their original runs. Anthony and Joe Russo are counted as a single entry because they are credited as co-directors on every film in their total; the same convention applies to any co-directed film, where each credited director receives the full gross. Streaming-only titles with no reported theatrical run are excluded, as are producing, writing and second-unit credits. Figures follow Wikipedia's list of highest-grossing film directors, compiled from The Numbers and Statista and current as of August 2026; the two 2026 releases that moved the list — The Odyssey and Toy Story 5 — were cross-checked against trade reporting. Box office totals are self-reported by distributors and tracked by commercial services rather than an official registry, so small variations between trackers are normal.

FAQ

Who is the highest-grossing film director of all time?

Steven Spielberg, with about $10.97 billion in worldwide box office across roughly 35 films. James Cameron is second at $10.59 billion.

Are these figures adjusted for inflation?

No. All totals are nominal dollars at the time of release, which favours recent films — a 1975 ticket cost a fraction of a 2026 one. Adjusted for inflation and for ticket-price growth, older directors such as Spielberg would pull further ahead.

Why are Anthony and Joe Russo counted as one director?

They are credited as co-directors on every feature in their total, so their filmography is identical. The general convention on this kind of list is that each credited director of a film receives the full worldwide gross, which is why co-directed films count in full for both names.

Which director earns the most per film?

James Cameron, by a wide margin. He has directed roughly a third as many features as Spielberg and is within $400 million of his total, because three of his films — Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water and Titanic — have each grossed over $2 billion.
