Quick answer: 1. Milo Hanson Buck, 2. Sam Aiuppa / James Martin Buck, 3. James Jordan Buck, 4. Dustin Huff Buck, 5. Larry Gibson Buck, 6. Frederick Kyress Buck, 7. Melvin J. Johnson Buck, 8. Stephen Jansen Buck, 9. Robert W. Smith Buck, 10. Hubert Collins Buck.

The Boone and Crockett Club has kept North America's official big-game records since the 1930s. Its score for a whitetail is a measure of the antlers in inches: main beam and tine lengths, circumferences and inside spread, minus deductions for asymmetry. That makes it the standard way hunters, biologists and state wildlife agencies compare trophy deer. This list covers the typical category, meaning bucks with symmetrical, conventionally shaped racks. The leaderboard changed in September 2026, when Boone and Crockett verified an Illinois buck taken in 1991 at 207-7/8 points. That made it the largest typical whitetail ever taken in the United States and moved it to No. 2 all-time.

How we ranked this

Bucks are ranked by final net typical score in the Boone and Crockett Club's Records of North American Big Game, as published by the Club. Scores are given in the Club's eighth-inch notation (e.g. 213-5/8) and charted as decimal inches. Only the typical whitetail category is included. Non-typical racks, which are scored separately and run much higher, are excluded, as are Pope and Young (archery-only) and other record books. Ties keep the Club's published order. The Huff buck from Indiana had an original entry score of 211-4/8, and some older Club pages still show that figure. This list uses 205-6/8, the score the Club now lists in its ranking of the biggest typical whitetails. That figure matches both the Club's billing of the deer as the No. 4 typical and its September 2026 statement that the Aiuppa buck (207-7/8) is the largest typical ever taken in the U.S. Rank 10 comes from the Club's published all-time standings. The range just below 204-2/8 has not been re-checked against every entry from the most recent edition of the records.

FAQ

What is the world record whitetail deer?

In the typical category, it is Milo Hanson's 1993 Saskatchewan buck, which Boone and Crockett scores at 213-5/8. Non-typical racks are scored in a separate category, where the top bucks score well over 300.

What is the difference between typical and non-typical whitetails?

A typical rack is symmetrical and conventionally shaped, and abnormal points count as deductions. A non-typical score adds abnormal points instead. That is why non-typical records are much higher and the two categories are never ranked together.

What is the largest typical whitetail ever taken in the United States?

The Sam Aiuppa buck, taken in LaSalle County, Illinois, in 1991. Boone and Crockett verified it at 207-7/8 in September 2026, putting it 1-6/8 inches ahead of Wisconsin's 1914 James Jordan buck.

How is a Boone and Crockett score measured?

Official measurers total the main beam lengths, tine lengths, four circumference measurements per side and the inside spread. They then subtract the side-to-side differences. Measurements are taken in eighths of an inch after a 60-day drying period, and top-ranking deer are re-measured by a Judges Panel.
