How we ranked this
Systems are ranked by distance from the Sun to the closest member of each stellar system, measured in light-years and derived from trigonometric (parallax) distances in Gaia DR3, cross-checked against the RECONS nearby-star census. Rank 1 is the nearest system. Distance is computed from each system's nearest component: for multiple-star systems (e.g. Alpha Centauri, Sirius) the distance is measured to whichever member is closest to the Sun. Inclusion criterion: each distinct gravitationally-bound star or sub-stellar system is counted once. Brown dwarfs and sub-brown dwarfs within roughly 8 light-years (Luhman 16, WISE 0855-0714) are included because they are physically among the nearest systems, even though they are too faint to see without infrared instruments. Parallax angles (in milliarcseconds) are listed for each system; distance in light-years is inversely proportional to parallax, so a larger parallax means a nearer system.
