Top 10 NFL Players by Career Sacks of All Time

The NFL's career sack leaders, ranked by official regular-season sacks since 1982 — Bruce Smith's 200 stands alone at the top.

Updated September 21, 2026 10 ranked 7 sources

Quick answer: 1. Bruce Smith, 2. Reggie White, 3. Kevin Greene, 4. Julius Peppers, 5. Chris Doleman, 6. Michael Strahan, 7. Jason Taylor, 8. Terrell Suggs, 9. Von Miller, 10. DeMarcus Ware.

Sacks only became an official NFL statistic in 1982, so this leaderboard covers every takedown from that season onward. One defender owns the record outright: Bruce Smith, the lone member of the 200-sack club, with Reggie White a mere two sacks behind him. The back half of this list has a fresh twist — Von Miller climbed to 138.5 sacks in the 2025 season and now sits tied with DeMarcus Ware, bumping two more Hall of Famers, Richard Dent and John Randle, out of the top 10 entirely.

How we ranked this

Rankings use official regular-season NFL sacks, the stat the league has recorded since 1982 (post-1982 figures from Pro Football Reference's official leaders). Players are ranked by career regular-season sack total, highest to lowest, using totals active through the 2025 season and including Miller's 2026 Cowboys signing, which does not change his total. Tied totals share the same rank, with ties ordered alphabetically by surname — so Von Miller edges DeMarcus Ware at 138.5. Richard Dent and John Randle are tied at 137.5 each and sit 11th, just outside this list. Pre-1982 sack estimates (e.g., Deacon Jones) are unofficial and excluded, as are playoff sacks.

FAQ

Who has the most sacks in NFL history?

Bruce Smith, with 200.0 official career sacks from 1985 to 2003. He is the only player to reach the 200-sack mark; Reggie White is second at 198.0.

Why isn't Deacon Jones on this list?

The NFL did not make the sack an official statistic until 1982, and this list uses official totals only. Jones's 173.5 sacks are unofficial estimates from pre-1982 game film, so he doesn't appear on the official leaderboard.

Who holds the single-season sack record?

Michael Strahan, who recorded 22.5 sacks for the New York Giants in 2001, breaking Mark Gastineau's previous record of 22. Strahan won Defensive Player of the Year that season.

Do playoff sacks count toward career totals?

No. Official career sack totals include regular-season games only. Postseason sacks are tracked separately and don't count toward a player's career ranking.

Who is the active leader in career sacks?

Von Miller, with 138.5 career sacks — more than any other active player. He signed with the Dallas Cowboys for the 2026 season, his 15th in the NFL, and is tied with DeMarcus Ware for ninth all time.
