How we ranked this

Countries are ranked by crude steel production in calendar year 2025, in million metric tonnes, as reported by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) in its 2025 annual production data (press release of 23 January 2026). worldsteel defines crude steel as steel in its first solid state after melting: ingots, semi-finished products and liquid steel for castings. Country figures are taken from the 2015-2025 table on Wikipedia's List of countries by steel production, which cites worldsteel's annual production data page; the China, India, United States, Japan, South Korea, Turkey and Germany figures were also checked against reporting of the worldsteel release. The 2024 figures and the world total (1,849.4 Mt) come from the same table. Share of world output is each country's 2025 figure divided by 1,849.4 Mt. Some national figures, including Russia's, are worldsteel estimates.

FAQ

Which country produces the most steel?

China, by a wide margin. It produced 960.8 million tonnes of crude steel in 2025, about 52% of the world total of 1,849.4 Mt, according to worldsteel.

What is crude steel?

worldsteel defines crude steel as steel in its first solid state after melting: ingots, semi-finished products and liquid steel for castings. It is the standard measure for comparing national steel output.

How does US steel output compare with China's?

In 2025 China produced 960.8 Mt and the United States 82.0 Mt, so China's output was about 11.7 times the US figure.

Did world steel output rise or fall in 2025?

It fell. worldsteel put world production at 1,849.4 Mt in 2025, down about 2% from 2024, mainly because of lower output in China and Europe.
