Rank 1 is the longest. Lengths for the top three are cross-checked against the U.S. Geological Survey's "World's Longest Rivers" figures (Nile 4,132 mi, Amazon 4,000 mi, Yangtze 3,915 mi, converted from miles); the Mississippi-Missouri figure and the remainder follow Wikipedia's compiled "List of river systems by length" and Encyclopaedia Britannica. Because the location of a river's ultimate source and its mouth can be defined differently, figures vary by a few percent between sources and the Nile-versus-Amazon order in particular is disputed; where sources disagree we note it. Inclusion is limited to natural river systems ranked solely on length, not discharge or drainage-basin area.
By the most common measure the Nile is the longest, at roughly 6,650 km (about 4,130 miles) traced to its most distant source. The Amazon is a very close second at about 6,400 km, and a 2009 study argued the Amazon may actually be longer, so the top spot is genuinely disputed.
A river's length depends on where you decide its true source is and where its mouth ends. Rivers have many branching headwater tributaries, and choosing a different one, or defining the ocean mouth differently, can change the total by dozens or hundreds of kilometers. That is why figures from the USGS, Britannica, and Wikipedia don't always match exactly.
The Mississippi-Missouri system, at about 6,275 km, is the longest in North America, and roughly 98.5% of it lies within the United States. Measured as a single named channel the Missouri is the longest U.S. river.
It depends on what you mean by bigger. The Nile is generally cited as slightly longer, but the Amazon is far larger by water discharge and drainage-basin area, carrying more water than the next several largest rivers combined.
